Money gives you the freedom to stand up for yourself

I’m usually an anxious person and don’t like arguing or conflict, so I’m scared of fighting back at work if the boss is unreasonable or yells about something that isn’t your fault (I work in a UPS shipping facility). Today I snapped back at my him effortlessly, consequences be damned. And truthfully, there weren’t any. He backed down and life went on.

My wife and I hit $1m in January, so I’ve been more confident since then. It’s amazing the security that money gives you. Losing the job a few years ago would have been akin to a death sentence in my mind. Now? A concern, but nothing life changing.

I’m having a really hard time finding another job, and I’m stuck as a part time supervisor in a UPS warehouse. Previously I was a financial analyst with UPS for 20 months, but the company is outsourcing almost everything that isn’t operations, so the finance department was on it’s way out. At the beginning of the pandemic, I was transferred to operations.

About 3 months in, I had had enough of that job and started looking for another one. I am still looking. The few calls I have received were either sales positions or employers that mistakenly thought I had more financial analyst experience than I did.

At the moment, I’m expected to make sure a bunch of 19-year old stoners with zero sense of urgency care enough about a thankless manual labor job that treats them like shit to show up on time at 3 am and work efficiently enough to get thousands of packages processed by the time the drivers have to leave. Usually I’m jumping into the fray as well.

Rant over. On the plus side, it’s a very physical job, so a gym membership is not required to keep the pounds off. The benefits are good too. (Sigh) Anyway, it’s nice to be able to tune it out because I can afford not to care about the pressure and just do my best. It still gets to me, though. I’m looking forward to the day I can truly afford to quit my job without worrying about having one.
